Yesterday I had a good reminder that I am getting older. I attended my first dads and doughnuts extravaganza at Sego Lily Elementary school, which is where Savana is attending kindergarten. Dads and doughnuts is an event where the dads come to school for the last 1/2 hour of the day (that means 11:30 am for a the morning kindergarten schedule), get a doughnut with their child, and then read a book with the child. Well, at least that is the school's intention.
When I got to the school, I was greeted by a nice lady who had the highest pitched voice I have ever heard in my entire life. I literally did a double take. She was super nice and offered me a doughnut but I truly wonder how many people start to laugh when they hear her talk. I guarantee she does not get taken seriously on the phone when she calls anyone that she does not know. I also guarantee all the windows in that school were made with tempered glass.
Once we were handed a doughnut, we were herded into the class rooms where we instantly became the center of attention and the pointing and the giggling began. After a few instructions, the most important being that the point of the whole event was to read to the child, we were told to spread out.
Well, the reading part of the event lasted a total of 30 seconds (that might be an exaggeration). Those kindergartners had absolutely no intention of paying attention to a book. Maybe I am just weird but reading a children's book to a child who is not paying attention is not all that exciting for me. The kids were way too busy checking out all the other Dad's. All Savana wanted to do is tell me who all her friends were, especially the boy (whose name ironically is Hadley) she has a crush on.
It was truly an interesting 1/2 hour. The kids seemed to love it which is what is important in the end. Savana had been looking forward to the event all week. I can't believe that I already have a kid in school. I still have vivid memories myself of being in elementary school and now I am going to the school for my child. Wow.
