Why Memorials Matter

*Note: This is more of a personal journal entry for my own benefit.

In 2004 an article came out in USA Weekend magazine that I will never forget. In fact, I kept the article and still have it today. The article is titled "Of Memory and Our Democracy" by Colin Powell. This evening I turned on the T.V. and watched part of the national memorial celebration that aired on PBS. I was touched when my girls grabbed the hymn book so they could sing the "Star Spangled Banner" along with the T.V. I was a proud parent when they stood with hands on their hearts and sang our national anthem. My mind immediately thought of the article and one of my favorite quotes:

"All of us lead busy lives. We have little time to pause and reflect. But I ask of you: Do not hasten through Memorial Day. Take the time to remember the good souls whose memories are a blessing to you and your family. Take your children to our memorial parks and monuments. Teach them the values that lend meaning to our lives and to the life of our nation. Above all, take the time to honor our fellow Americans who have given their last full measure of devotion to our country and for the freedoms we cherish."

I think it's so important for all of us to take a moment and remember why we have memorial day. I want my kids to remember why we celebrate memorial day and not think of it as a BBQ holiday. Not only do I want them to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom, but also all of their family and loved ones who have passed on that have influenced our lives today.

I am so grateful to live in this great nation and for the men and women who fought, and continue to fight for my freedom. Please remember them this weekend!

You are such a great mom, your kids are blessed to have someone to teach them the true meanings behind these holidays.
